The Story Behind Grenada’s Favorite Party Sandwich: Cheesepaste Memories
There’s something magical about the first bite of a cheesepaste sandwich—creamy, colorful, and unexpectedly nostalgic. In Grenada, cheesepaste isn’t just a snack; it’s a childhood memory, a party platter essential, and a comfort food classic. Whether you grew up with it at birthday parties, school lunches, or Sunday school snack, this simple spread holds a flavorful place in our hearts—and our kitchens.
Storytime: A Sandwich Spread in love
My love for cheesepaste sandwiches began with my grandmother.
Growing up, one of our most anticipated times of year in Grenada was Harvest— It’s a Catholic tradition dedicated to giving thanks for abundance, especially the blessings of food.
She adored attending Harvest services, not only at our home church but also at her friends church. Of all her grands, I was always by her side. And you know what sealed the deal for me? The cheesepaste sandwiches!

As soon as the food was laid out, the cheesepaste sandwiches were always the first to appear—like clockwork. And little me? I’d be demolishing them. I’d pile as many as I could onto a tiny plate (and my hands), then hover nearby for when the second tray came out. Sure, the fried bakes, fishcakes, candy, and cheesestraws were delicious too—but nothing touched those soft, pastel-colored cheesepaste sandwiches.
Some were made in single slices, others stacked in two or three layers. Every version was a treat. And just before leaving, I’d nudge my grandmother and ask for a few more “for the road.” Obsessed is an understatement. Lol
