Ingredients

  • 2 Âľ cups bread flour plus extra ½ cup just in case
  • 1 packet 2ÂĽ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 cup milk lukewarm
  • â…“ cup melted unsalted butter cooled
  • â…“ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg room temperature

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, add lukewarm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
Add the yeast, gently stir and let sit for 10 minutes, until it becomes foamy and active.
  • (If using instant yeast, skip this step and add it directly to the flour.)
  • In the same bowl, add melted butter, egg and salt.
  • Gradually add flour. Mix with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth, soft, and slightly tacky (not sticky). Add more flour as needed, a tablespoon at a time.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape into balls and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet or in a lightly greased 9×13 pan.
  • Cover and let rise for 45 minutes until puffy.
  • Bake at 350°F (177°C) for 20–22 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  • Brush warm rolls with melted butter. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • If dough feels too soft or sticky, gradually add up to ½ cup more flour (1 tbsp at a time) until it forms a soft, workable dough.
  • Sugar Step: Dissolving sugar in the milk before adding yeast ensures consistent yeast activation.
  • Testing Temperature: Milk should feel warm to the touch, not hot (around 105–110°F).
  • The dough should feel slightly tacky but not cling to your fingers.
  • Best enjoyed fresh, but can be reheated for a few seconds in the microwave or a warm oven.
